Phyllis Anne Dlugokecki a Naperville resident since 1998
Funeral services for Mrs. Phyllis Anne Dlugokecki (nee Bassett), 51, formerly
of Bridgton, Maine and Greeneville, Tenn., will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday,
March 16, at Knox Presbyterian Church, 1105 Catalpa Lane, Naperville, with the
Rev. Deb Roberts officiating. Interment will be private. Visitation will be
from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S.
Mill St., Naperville.
Born April 21, 1955, in Quincy, Mass., she died Sunday, March 11, 2007, at her
home, after a year long battle with melanoma. Phyllis grew up in Braintree, Mass.
and later received her B.A. from Regis College, Weston, Mass. Phyllis owned
and operated Punkin' Valley Play School in Bridgton and she was also a public
school teacher in Bartlett, N.H., Greeneville, and most recently at Graham
Elementary School, Naperville. Phyllis lived the expression written by author
Harvey MacKay, "Find something you love to do and you'll never have to work a
day in your life." By that standard, she never worked at all. Phyllis was excited
to be with her students every day and to share stories from school with her friends
and family. She treasured opportunities to visit with former students, and many of
them contacted her during her battle with cancer to provide support and to express
their gratitude.
As a woman who loved life and exploration of all sorts, Phyllis was
passionate about travel. She and her husband, Andrew, had a fondness for
European food and culture. They spent Christmas of 2004 in Italy with their
three children, hiking along the coast and visiting the town of Cinque Terre,
a trip and holiday memory that has remained very special to all of them.
Phyllis also treasured the time she and Andrew spent in Sweden during August
of 2005. Andrew and Phyllis recently looked back upon this as their last and
best time together as Phyllis' disease struck only months later.
Phyllis and Andrew met in 1974, while they were attending college in the Boston
area. They were a special pair because of the way they complimented one another.
While Andrew took care of life's details, Phyllis never lost sight of the big
picture. Together they took in the joys of life and its trials too. Phyllis
was the mother of three children, and she cared for them beautifully. S
always made time to listen and spoke to them in quirky sayings, such as "The
fox will run again." These messages were comforting because they were uniquely
hers. She was always ready - whether for her kids or their friends - with big
hugs and "twizzlahs." Phyllis, a member of Knox Presbyterian Church, was
faithful to God in prayer. Even in her illness, she began every prayer
thanking God for his goodness and blessings - the day, her family, the sun.
She had the ability to see God in things that could have easily been
overlooked, and Christ drew people to himself through the warmth and love of
her spirit.
Phyllis is survived by her husband, Andrew N. Dlugokecki of Naperville, whom
she married on Oct. 17, 1981; children, Anne Nicole, Julie Kathleen and John
Andrew Dlugokecki; her mother, Kathleen (nee Hennebery) Bassett of Norwell,
Mass.; brother, Christopher Bassett of Boston; sister, Nancy Williams of Norwell;
several nieces and nephews; aunt, Jeanne Hennebery of Scituate, Mass.; and her
mother-in-law, Jennie Dlugokecki of Stoughton, Mass.
She was preceded in death by her father, Cyril F. Bassett; and father-
in-law, Zigmund Dlugokecki. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the
