    • He graduated from Greenfield High School in 1935. He worked 7 years in
      a brokerage office and then went to work at the Franklin County Trust Co. in
      1942 as a messenger boy. He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and came out of Boot
      Camp as a Storekeeper Third Class Petty Officer. He served in England with the
      First U.S. Navy Air Expeditionary Force. He went back to the States and
      shipped out on the Blue Jacket, a refrigerated cargo ship, in the Pacif
      carrying supplies to the fleet.

      He was active in Boy Scouts and served as a cub master and scoutmaster
      and was awarded the Scoutmaster's Key and Silver Beaver award. He was also
      active in town affairs and served 6 years as Selectman in Erving, Massachusetts
      and more than 10 years as Moderator.

      He went to work at Greenfield Co-operative Bank in 1947 as a teller
      and in 1955 became President and CEO. He retired in 1978 and built a home on
      Lake Byred in Avon Park, Florida.

      AVON PARK, Fla. – Ralph L. Bassett, 91, of Avon Park, former resident of
      Erving, Mass., died Sunday (2-24-08) at home. Bassett was president of
      Greenfield (Mass.) Co-operative Bank for more than 10 years., direct
      Greenfield Co-operative Bank for 20 years. He had a banking career that
      spanned over 40 years. He joined Greenfield Co-operative Bank in 1948 a
      retired in 1979. He was elected treasurer and member of the Board of Directors
      in 1959 and became president in 1968. He was a graduate of Greenfield high
      School, New York Stock Exchange Institute of Investments and LaSalle
      University, Philadelphia.

      A member of the Boy Scouts of America, he started Troop 69 in Deerfield,
      Mass., and had served as scoutmaster, cub master, executive council member and
      district commissioner. In 1960, he was awarded the Silver Beaver award for his
      many years of outstanding service.

      He served in the Navy during World War II with the First Naval Air
      Expeditionary Force in Europe and with the Fifth Fleet in the Pacific Theatre
      on the USS Bluejacket.

      He lived in Erving for many years, serving as trustee of the Millers Falls
      Scout building, 25 years as a police officer, two of those years as chief. He
      was a selectman for six years, moderator for five years and served on t
      Finance Committee for three years.

      He founded and became the first president of the Franklin County Police
      Association. He was county treasurer of the American Heart Association and
      served as treasurer and deacon of the Millers Falls Congregational Church and
      treasurer of the Greenfield Health Camp.

      He was a member of the Republican Lodge of Masons and a 32nd degree Mason. He
      married the former Marjorie Coull on Sept. 14, 1940. She predeceased him in
      July 1977. He is survived by a daughter, Virginia Hodge and her husband Barry
      of Monroe, Maine; two sons, Bruce Bassett and his wife Patricia of Palm Beach,
      Fla., and Douglas Bassett and his wife Deborah of Erving; seven grandchildren
      and seven great-grandchildren.

      Graveside services will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial
      donations are suggested to the Humane Society of Highlands County, 7321
      Haywood Taylor Boulevard, Sebring, FL 33876. Fountain Funeral Home Inc. is in
      charge of arrangements.
