- Elliot was known as Cookie. He went to school in Montclair, New
Jersey. He was an expert machine gunner and participated in the Madeira
Revolution. He operated a machine gun for the United Fruit Company in South
America. He was there when World War I began and enlisted for the U.S. Army in
Panama. An early enlistment record shows him as having enlisted on 6 Nov 1914
at Camp E.S. Oter, Canal Zone for 7 years and assigned to C Company, 10th Inf
sd. He was appointed Corporal on 7 Apr 1915, Sergeant on 19 Oct 1915, and 1st
Lieutenant on 8 Jul 1916. On 10 Jul 1917 he resigned as 1st Sgt. of H Company,
33rd Infantry, to accept a commission as 2nd Lt. He arrived in France on 8 Sep
1917. He was promoted throughout the war and wounded at Vierzy, the Soissons
offensive on 18 Jul 1918. He was cited for bravery five times. He achieved the
rank of Brigadier General before he retired and was decorated with the French
Legion of Honor, the Croix de Guerre (twice), the DSM, Silver Star w/OL
Legion of Merit, Legion of Honor, Purple Heart, WW1 Victory Medal 2/4 bronze
battle clasps and Defensive Sector clasp, WW2 Victory Medal, Asiatic Pacific
Campaign Medal, and the Distinguished Service Medal. He retired from active
duty on 31 Oct 1950.
He died at age 69 while residing at 105 Canterbury Hill, San Antonio,
Texas. He was buried at Ft. Sam Houston with full military honors.
