Suzanne Bassett, at 67, cancer society retired VP
Suzanne P. (Posson) Bassett of Walpole, retired senior vice president for the
American Cancer Society's New England division, died on Dec. 31 after a year
long battle with cancer, She was 67.
Born in Rochester, N.Y., she lived in Walpole for nearly 40 years. She earned
a bachelor's degree in history from Oberlin College, a certificate from the
Harvard-Radcliffe program in business administration and a master's degree in
health administration from Lesley College.
Mrs. Bassett joined the American Cancer Society in 1982 and held a variety of
senior management positions. After first directing the Society's Greater
Boston cancer control, patient services and income development activities, she
was promoted to director of field services, and later to deputy executi
director for the Massachusetts division. When the Society reorganized into the
New England division in 1997, she was appointed senior vice president of field
operations for the six-state region.
Mrs. Bassett was instrumental in establishing the Society's Making Strides
Against Breast Cancer walk as the nation's premiere annual breast cancer team
event. She mentored a generation of Society volunteers and staff in advocating
for cancer control at the community level. For two years, she also served on
the faculty for the Society's national staff learning and development
institute in Atlanta.
She began her career in the late 1950s as the executive administrator f
Harvard Medical School's infectious disease department at Boston City
Hospital. Throughout the 1970s, she was an active volunteer with local human
service organizations. Recently, she participated in the national Women
Health Initiative nine-year study on diet and heart disease.
Mrs. Bassett held leadership positions with the Walpole Visiting Nurse
Association, the Walpole Emergency Medical Aid Fund and Project FACE, n
known as the Center for Community Counseling and Education. She was also a
member of the League of Women Voters.
Mrs. Bassett is survived by her husband, Robert D.; three daughters, Sarah of
Needham, Katherine Kavanagh of Warwick, R.I., and Carolyn of Gill; a brother,
Peter Posson of Rochester, N.Y.; four grandsons; and a step-granddaughter.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. today at the United Church in
Walpole.
Burial will be private.
