Just before we cross the canal bridge, abutting the towpath, is Clinton Kimball’s grocery store. He’s 30 years old and caters to the canal trade. Next to him is the Crouse and Bassett general store (west wide corner of Manlius Center Rd and the towpath side of the Erie Canal). Henry Crouse, age 34, and his brother Robert, age 28, are partners in this store with Orzo T. Bassett. The Crouse brothers live down in Fayetteville, but Orzo calls Manlius Center home. He’s 40 and his wife Anna S. is 26. They have two sons, who are Frank T. age 7, and Thomas C. age 6. If you all plan to move here in the future you most likely will be mailing and receiving your mail here as the nearest post office is inside this store.
