      Mrs. Sarah A. Bassett

Mrs. Sarah A. Bassett, widow of Captain Edgar M. Bassett, died last night at the home of her daughter, Mrs. H. H. Wood, on Canton street, after a brief illness, at the advanced age of 86 years and 5 months. Mrs. Bassett was well known in this city and her memory will be held dear in many homes. She was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Town, who came to Lisbon from Salem, Washington county, when St. Lawrence county was largely forest land. Mrs. Bassett was born on a farm in Lisbon. She was married about sixty-five years ago to the late Captain Bassett, a well known vessel captain on the lakes. He died in 1869. Mrs. Bassett was a nurse for over thirty years, before the day of the trained nurse, and her duties were performed in nearly all the prominent families of the city. One of her treasures was an album containing photographs of many of the children she had cared for in infancy. She was an industrious, kind-hearted Christian woman and her departure removed a pure, good life. She was a woman of extraordinary activity and could do as much housework as any woman. Age began to tell on her a couple of months ago, though she was confined to the bed only ten days. Besides her daughter, she leaves one son, Edgar M. Bassett, of this city.
