Vernon Chris Bass
HUMBOLDT - Vernon Chris Bass, 80, of Humboldt, formerly of North Platte, died Aug. 30, 2005, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Lincoln.
He was born Jan. 22, 1925, at North Platte to Ora E. and Ida Rena Johnson Bass. He grew up in North Platte and graduated from North Platte High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in May 1943 and was discharged in November 1945.
On May 14, 1948, he married Donna Cherry in California. He hired on with the Union Pacific Railroad in 1951 and retired in August 1985. He married Eva Mae Helt Carlin on May 7, 1982, at Holyoke, Colo., and they made their home in North Platte.
Mr. Bass was a member of the First Christian Church, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1504 and Aeries 2839 F.O.E. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing pool.
Survivors include his wife, Eva of Humboldt; two daughters, Kristine (Pat) Martino of Denver and Elizabeth Bass of North Platte; a son, Kevin E. (Chris) Bass of Plattsville, Colo.; two stepsons, Keith D. "Kip" (Peggy) Carlin and Herbert C. Carlin, all of Humboldt; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and other family.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Donna; his parents; two sisters, Esther Razes and Marie Winchester; and three brothers, Clarence Bass, Everett Bass and Virgil Bass.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Memorial graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Fort McPherson National Cemetery with Ron Snell officiating and military honors by the North Platte Veteran's Honor Guard. Cremation was chosen.
Those wishing to sign the book may do so from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. today at Odean Colonial Chapel at C & Sycamore and prior to services at Fort McPherson National Cemetery.
