John D. Bassette, Jr.
Cornish Flat, NH ? John Davenport Bassette, Jr. passed away on Tuesday, December 21, 2021 at age 88, at home surrounded by his wife Ruth and son Gregory. He was born in Waterbury, CT., April 22, 1933 to Ina Atwood Bassette and John Davenport Bassette, Sr. He attended elementary school in Gill, Mass., High school at Northfield Mt. Herman in Mass., and Dartmouth College, graduating in 1955. He enlisted in the Army, serving in the 10th Mountain Division in Leadville, Colorado, training troops for cold weather survival and mountain warfare.
His life interests were football, skiing, his specialty being Nordic combined, and track and field events. His family and grandchildren benefitted greatly from his experiences in these fields,
He was a man of many talents. Besides the sports, he was an accomplished singer, enjoying being with many groups, the Upper Valley Men's Chorus, Freelance Family Singers and church choir.
He also worked for PPG, managing many locations in the east. Returning back to Vermont. Real Estate became his life source and had offices in Vermont and New Hampshire. He retired from that in 2005 after his wife Anne died. He is predeceased by his sister Jean, his brother Buell and a daughter-in-law Lilia Bassette.
He married Anne Boyle in 1957. They had four sons, John F. Bassette, (Donna Lee) of Hartland, Vermont, Dr. Jeffery Bassette, (Dr. Shannon I. Moore Bassette) of Washington State, Gregory Bassette of Lakeland, FL., and David M. Bassette of Okinawa, Japan.
He married his wife Ruth in 2007, and is survived by her and three step-daughters and his four sons. There are many nieces and nephews as well as 17 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren from both families.
His was a life of happiness and love, compassion and giving. He is very missed.
Thank you to all who helped in this time of need and to Hospice care from Bayada, his nurse Janet and aide Tina. The family is eternally grateful.
There is a private graveside service this May. Memorials can be made to charities of your choice in his name.
