      Wilfred J. Bassett, 77, Navy veteran of WWII

      CHESHIRE -- Wilfred J. "Tootsie" Bassett, 77, of 550 Savoy Road died Sunday morning at North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in Adams on Oct. 8, 1922, son of Joseph and Lillian Clairmont Bassett, he attended the former Pumpkin Hook School in Cheshire. He was raised by his grandparents, Stephen and Mederise Clairmont, and worked on their Clairmont Farm. A World War II Navy veteran, he served in the Pacific theater aboard the USS Rescue, a hospital ship, which was docked next to the USS Missouri during the signing of the surrender of Japan. Upon his return to Cheshire in 1947, he and his mother purchased Pleasant View Farm, which he operated until its sale in 1953. From 1954 to 1967, he was employed by the former L.L. Brown Paper Co. in Adams. He retired in 1987 from GE, where he was a quality control inspector for 20 years. Mr. Bassett was a communicant of St. Mary's Church, and a member of the GE Pensioners' and Maple Grove Civic clubs. His wife, the former Rita Lefebvre, whom he married April 23, 1949, died Dec. 1, 1996. He leaves three daughters, Shirley Nye and Brenda Volff, both of Cheshire, and Barbara Louison of Adams; four grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Wilfred J. "Tootsie" Bassett will be Wednesday, May 17, at 10 from TROTTIER-PRINGLE FUNERAL HOME, Adams, with the Rev. Daniel J. Boyle, pastor of the Parish of Notre Dame Des Sept Douleurs and St. Thomas Aquinas in Adams, officiating. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Tuesday, May 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. Mr. Bassett leaves his grandchildren, Brian Nye, Christie Lynn Volff and Amy Marie Volff, all of Cheshire, and Daniel Nye of Adams; and two great-grandchildren, Daniel Nye Jr. and Colleen Paige, both of Adams.
