    • MRS. H.S. BASSETT PIONEER RESIDENT PASSES AWAY
Services Held Sunday For Wife of Community's Oldest Merchant
Mrs. Belle R. Bassett, 83, wife of Tuscola's oldest living business man, passed away Friday, Jul 26, at her home in Tuscola. About 20 years ago, Mrs. Bassett suffered a spinal injury when an automobile in which she was riding hit a deep hole in the road, throwing her high into the air. The injury she sustained is said to have contributed to the cause of her death.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the McGary funeral home with the Rev. W.M. Greer of the First Baptist church in charge. Interment was in the Tuscola cemetery.
Mrs. Bassett, whose maiden name was Hunt, was a native of Indiana, having been born at Prairetown on March 3, 1857. She moved to Tuscola with her widowed mother and family during the early eighties and had made her home here since.
On November 27, 1887, she was married to Harvey S. Bassett who survives. Their only son, J. Frank Bassett, died August 9, 1916.
Her passing brings sorrow to many for few who knew her failed to share in her kind personality and generous character. In spite of the fact that her injury must have caused a great deal of pain during the last years of her life, Mrs. Bassett never complained and her concern for others made her greatly beloved, especially among children.
When she came to Tuscola as a young lady, Mrs. Bassett brought her letter to the Baptist church of which she was a devoted member. Her home and her church were foremost in her mind and to her Mr. Bassett gives a large measure of credit for his place in life. He is the last living member of his family, a lifelong resident of Tuscola and has conducted a business here longer than any living person.
Mr. and Mrs. Bassett were among the last of Tuscola's pioneer residents. Together they had watched the city prosper and grow from a tiny, dirt street village to the thriving county seat of one of the best farm counties in this section. They had seen generations pass and set for them a living example of useful lives.
