Duane R. Bassett
WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Duane Robinson Bassett, 70, of 64 Westla
Ave., former resident of Bennington, and an accomplished pianist and organist,
died early this morning at his home here.
Mr. Bassett, son of Hugh Miller and Ida (Robinson) Bassett, was born
in Bennington March 5, 1893. He was a graduate of Bennington High School and
Virgil School of Music in New York City.
A gifted pianist and organist he had in his younger years be
instructor and was accompanist and soloist at many concerts in Bennington and
the area. Since going to Connecticut in the late 1930s, he had been
accompanist for noted concert singers and was a piano teacher, and guest
organist in a number of churches in the Hartford area. He was a retired
employee of Veeter-Root Co. He retired in January, 1959.
Mr. Bassett was a member and deacon of Immanuel Congregational Church,
a member of the Hartford Chapter of the American Guild of Organists, a member
of Hayes Velhage Post, American Legion No. 96 of West Hartford and also
belonged to Willis Lodge No, 97, AFAM.
Surviving are his wife, the former Carolyn Hill, a former Bennington
High School teacher; two daughters, Mrs. Sylvia (Bassett) Seaman of
Farmington, Conn., and Mrs. Kathleen (Bassett) Hansen of Vineland, N.J.; six
grandchildren.
Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Immanuel
Congregational Church Chapel, Hartford, with the Rev. Robert L. Edwards and the
Rev. William T. Knapp officiating.
Contributions may be made to the Immanuel Congregational Church Book
of Remembrance for the Hartford Heart Association in his memor
Burial will be at Soldier Field. He was a World War I veteran.
