As a youth, Dale was active in Boy Scouts, basketball, football and all outdoor activities. Dale graduated from Sanborn Public School in 1959. In 1963, Dale enlisted in the U.S. Army as a military policeman and was an Army sharp shooter. In December 28, 1963 he was united in marriage to his red headed sweetheart, Carol Brummer of Jeffers. The ceremony was held at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Sanborn, where Dale was a life-long member. He loved being a part of the "Brummer Bunch" family.
Dale was honorably discharged from the Army in 1964 and returned to the family business with his father, Peter W. as a partner. Dale grew the Bassett's Meat brand to a household name, known for quality all across the midwest.
In 1996, he traveled to Russia, where he taught sausage making. In partnership with Land-O-Lakes, he made three separate teaching visits to Russia. Dale was a member and past-president of the Minnesota Association of Meat Processors, a member of the Knights of Columbus, a firearms safety instructor and a former Sanborn city council member. He participated in the development of the Sanborn Farmers Golf Course and was a volunteer on the Sanborn fire department. Dale was a life-long outdoorsman, building his home in Sanborn near the Cottonwood River, where he and the family enjoyed outdoor activities all year long. He was always up for an adventure with his family and friends. He loved to entertain at the cabin, pulling skiers and tubers behind the boat, going on hikes and finding walking sticks for everyone along the way. He was a mentor, teacher, businessman, father and warm-hearted man. He was always there to help when help was needed. He offered tractor rides to any kid who came to Sanborn. He loved slicing watermelon at watermelon days, making homemade ice cream, root beer floats and decorating cookies. He loved trips to the Sanborn DQ, meat conventions, ball games and family activities.
