Geroge Council Bass Jr.
December 3, 1943 ? July 29, 2022
A loving, dedicated husband, father, and family man, George Council Bass, Jr. 78 died peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on July 29, 2022, in Fairfax County, Virginia. He had waged a valiant fight against Agent Orange induced leukemia.
George was born December 3, 1943, in Memphis, Tennessee to the late George Council Bass, Sr. and Eva Louise Moore Bass. George grew up in the Orange Mound where the Bass family was one of the original founders of the community. He graduated Melrose High School in 1961. At Melrose, he was captain in the National Defense Cadet Corps and a member of the yearbook staff. He earned a scholarship to LeMoyne College where he majored in mathematics. In 1964, George joined the United State Marine Corps and served in the Vietnam War. During the War, he was wounded in battle and awarded the Purple Heart. George earned the rank of Sargent and received an honorable discharge in 1967.
In 1966, he married Juanita Gardner, his best friend from 1st grade through college. Each wedding anniversary, they told the story of their getting married while he was still in a full body cast, recovering from his injuries in the Vietnam.
Following his service as a Marine, George worked with Pacific Finance Company (TransAmerica) as the first Black Regional Finance manager. He, then, worked for Spector Redball Trucking where he was the first Black Regional Dispatcher. George joined the United States Postal Service and retired from the Memphis Bulk Mail Center as an IT Supervisor in 2012.
George accepted Christ into his heart at his family?s church, Christ Temple Church of Christ Holiness USA at the age of 12 under the guidance of his Uncle Clee. As a young man, he was a member of Stephens Baptist Church, his mother?s church. Until his death, George was a member of Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church where he co-developed with his wife Juanita a Sunday School class (Love Manifested) for special needs members. He participated in the church choir as a baritone for over 15 years. Reading the Bible and talking to his family about God?s saving mercy brought joy to him.
Through the years he had many interests: George loved fishing and could stay on the lake all day. He was also an avid Sci-Fi fan. He enjoyed the Dune Book Series and later the Star Trek movie/series franchise. He was a member of a CB radio club where his handle was ?Bigwheel?. He also relished in a good political debate.
George is survived by his wife of 55 years, Juanita, 3 daughters Andrea Lynne Bass, Karen Elizabeth Bass-McFadden (Randolph), and Allyson Denise Bass McCollum (Michael). He has 4 grandchildren: Elaine Lynne and Darius Calvin McFadden, Athnee? Charlisa McCollum and Matthew Langston-Bass McCollum; 2 great-grandchildren, Madison Sophia Lasane and Abre O?Shea Marshall. He is also survived by sisters Erma Bass Fitzgerald, (James), Georgia Riley Turner (Quincy) Deborah Riley Young (Foster), and brother Joseph Riley (Doris). He was preceded in death by sisters Dareatha Bass Scott-Wilkinson, Rose Bass Phillips, brother Larry Riley and niece Rosetta Renee Bass-Brown. George was a father figure to nieces Pamilla Scott, Shelbye Scott Turnage (Raymond), and nephews Ronald Scott (Vickey), Eric Scott, and Alex Scott. He is also survived by his aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews from the Moore and Bass families.
Juanita and George?s girls thank their Memphis friends and neighbors and their new-found Virginia neighbors and friends who have been a source of comfort as they prepare for a different life. They are sustained by that support and strengthened through the grace of having known George and been loved by him.
Visitation is set for 12 noon at Miller Funeral Home and Crematory 3200 Golansky Blvd Woodbridge VA 22192 to be followed by a graveside service at Quantico National Cemetery 18424 Joplin Rd Triangle, VA 22172.
