Philip Bennett Huguenin - Since the boom days of 1925, Philip Bennett Huguenin has had a hand in the development of Southwester Florida through his activities in the electric light and power business. Now district manager of the Florida Power and Light Company at Bradenton, he looks back at a long career in a similar position at Sarasota and to the days when he helped plan and install the transmission line tying together the company's electric generating stations and forward to continued expansion of his company and the continued growth of his region. He has been active in financial institutions and other economic programs, in health and welfare work, and in civic an religious groups.
Born at Wilmette, Illinois, on September 28, 1900, he is the son of Philip and Gertrude (Bennett) Huguenin. He attended the public schools of Wilmette and Winnetka, Illinois, and was graduated from high school in the later city. With Worlk War I embroiling many nations breaking out at the time he took his diploma, Mr. Huguenin affered his services to the American Red Cross as a ambulance driver and was overseas until August 1919. Upon his return to the states and civilian life, he matriculated at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois. After two years of study there, he became a student-employee of the Inland Steel Company in Chicago.
In the fall of 1925, Mr. Huguenin was appointed to the staff of the Phoenix Utility Company, a construction firm which erected power plants and installed transmission lines for the Florida Power and Light Company. Sent to Florida as a surveyor along the southwest coast for generation station transmission lines, he has been in this region ever since. He remained with what was then the new system of the Florida Power and Light Company, being attached to the Punta GOrda District in November 1926. The following March he was made manager of the district, a post he held until 1939, when he was transferred to Sarasota District as manager. In 1955 he became manager of the Bradenton District.
In the period of his first managerial, he was president of the Punta Gorda Federal Savings and Loan Association and a direcotr of the Punta Gorda State Bank. At Sarasota he served as president of the Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis Club as well as treasurer of the Sarasota County Public Hospital Board. He was a member of the vestry of the Episcopal Church in Sarasota, and is active in various organizations, including the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Bradenton Kiwanis Club, and the Bradenton Country Club. He is also a member of the Sarasota Bay Country Club. He is a member of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers, the Society of American Military Engineers, and the Sons of American Revolution.
Mr. Huguenin married Iris Bassett, daughter of Betton and Jessie (Allan) Bassett of Punta Gorda, in that city on November 18, 1927. They have two children: 1. Philip Stanley, born on February 11, 1941. 2. Judith Allan, born on September 4, 1946.
