Letter from Alva R. Bassett, written November 8, 2002
My grandparent was Byron Bassett who was born in 1847 and died in 1923 in Orting, Washington. He was a blacksmith in Coudersport, Pennsylvania and moved to Chehalis, Washinton in 1893. He married Lorenza Leach. The family homesteaded near Onalaska, Washington and later opened a blacksmith shop at Napavine, Washington.
George Byron Bassett, a son, went to Vancouver Island, Canada where he married an Indian lady. He built a sawmill and lived at Aleut Bay at the north end of Vancouver, Island, British Columbia. They had several children.
My father, Leroy Bassett, had an uncle, George F. Bassett, who came West several years before the Byron Bassett, who came west in 1893. He drove a stagecoach in the Southwest, U.S.A.
While traveling in Southeastern Nevada, we visited the Lehman Caves National Monument. As we reached the exit of the caves we passed through a large white room where in the early days people wrote their names on the walls using their Carbide lanterns to write in large letters "George Bassett - 1888". Also, near Ely, Nevada there is a small lake named "Bassett Lake".
I have a couple of family heirlooms which were passed on to me from my father, Leroy Orvel Bassett, who told me they had belonged to his Uncle George F. Bassett. They are a sword and a scabbord. The name George F. Bassett is engraved on the blade. I also have an old family pistol. My father and my Uncle Frank Bassett told me that their Uncle George Bassett had carried it when he drove stagecoach. The sword must have been used in a Lodge since the initials K.P. are engraved on the handle. I also have a family portrait which has George and Cassie Bassett Family. There are four children in the picture - 3 boys and 1 girl. I do not have their names or address.
This is all the information I have. It is a pleasure to have heard from you! I wish you luck in completing your family tree!
      Yours Truly, Alva Bassett.
      Raymond, Washington.
