On James Stephens, who was thrown down by two men, named William Bassett, and George Bassett, some months since; in the fall his left leg was broken, and he died in consequence of this injury. Verdict, Manslaughter, and the parties were committed by the coroner, for trial at the ensuing assizes.

Two men named George and William Bassett, have been committed by the Stroud magistrates, for trial at the ensuing assizes under a coroner's warrant charged with killing and slaying a man named Stephens. The Bassett were in company with Stephens in the last harvest, and threw him down violently and broke his leg, of which injury Stephens last week died.

Wm. Bassett, aged 19, and Geo. Bassett, aged 17, were charged with the manslaughter of James Stephens.
The prisoners were undefended. Mr. McGachen prosecuted and stated the case.
George was 22, Euphelia, 20. He emigrated to the United States.
He and his brother William were charged on 25 Dec 1850 with "on the coroners inquisition he did unlawfully kill and slay James Stephens" GRO records QGC6/2 25/12/1850. He was sentenced to 6 months hard labour. The records show he had light hair, was 5 feet 7 inches tall, hazel eyes, and bushy eyebrows that met in the middle. He had small moles on upper right arm.
