Elizabeth Earthman Bassett
Elizabeth Earthman Bassett, 93, after a lifetime of high-energy volunteering, died durrounded by her family on Monday,, December 22, 2008. Elizabeth was born May 1, 1915, in Dallas, TX. She followed her husband, Charles C. Bassett, to Kentucky in 1937. While living in Danville, KY, she ran a USO club for traumatized World War II veterans. After moving to Louisville with her family in 1945 she joined the Highland Presbyterian Church Women's Club. She was later on the boards of Cabbage Patch and the Louisville Deaf Oral School. Elizabeth was very active in helping Dr. Charles Shedd found the Shedd Association that was devoted to dyslexia research and remedial teaching, then devoted four decades to its administration and to tutoring dyslexic children. Elizabeth retired from the dyslexia foundation at 89 years of age. She is survived by her two daughters, Betty Bruton and Jo Ann Campbell (Peter), both of Louisville; her son, Robert Moorman Bassett (Elaine Palmer), of Greenwood, SC; her grandchildren, Peter Campbell III and Whitney Campbell, of Louisville, Macauley Bruton of Beverly Hills, CA and Ian Bruton (Sylvania) of Jeffersonville, IN; and great-grandchildren, Ian, David and Macauley Bruton. She will also be remembered by all those she touched through the dyslexia program, and by her dear, devoted friend O. Grant Bruton. The family is being served by Neurath & Underwood Funeral Home, 725 E. Market St. Graveside services will be held at 11 am, Friday in Cave Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the Shedd Association, 4801 Sherburn Lane, LL1, Louisville, KY 40207.
