Virginia Gray McCollum Bassett
KERNERSVILLE - Virginia Gray McCollum Bassett, 86, passed away Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, at Kerner Ridge Assisted Living. She was born Aug. 22, 1920, in Forsyth County to Ernest and Betty Hurst McCollum. She was a member of Vernon Forest Baptist Church. Virginia was a godly wife and mother, she taught Sunday school for 42 years, and continued to serve the Lord through teaching a weekly Bible study at Kerner Ridge. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Wesley Bassett; a granddaughter, Ronda Bassett; and a great-grandson, John Curtis Bassett. Surviving are three children, Harold Wesley Bassett and wife Doris, Carolyn Wilson and husband Manuel, and Julia Brown and husband Tom; two sisters, Frances Coone and Sue Cartwright; six grandchildren, Rena Bailey, Jonathan Wilson, Ronnie Bassett, Kent Brown, Terri Youngblood, and Michael Wilson; 12 great-grandchildren and many special friends. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, at Vernon Forest Baptist Church, with Pastor James Brown and the Rev. Terry Coats officiating. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today, Jan. 19, at Hayworth-Miller-Cain Funeral Home in Kernersville. The family requests that memorials be directed to Vernon Forest Baptist Church Missions Fund, 274 Mt. Vernon Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27107. The family would like to express its sincere gratitude to the staff at Kerner Ridge for all the loving care that was given to our mother.
