Beloved wife of the late Marc Bessette. Loving mother of Catherine (Mark) Hafeli, Stephen Bessette, and Peggy (James) Knight. Cherished grandmother of Mark, Anne, Elizabeth, Michael, Stuart, and Graham. Great-grandmother of 7. Dear sister of Dr. Edward Mikula. Visitation at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home, 1368 N. Crooks Rd. (between 14-15 Mile Rds.), Monday 3-7pm. Funeral Mass at St. Hugo of the Hills Stone Chapel, 2215 Opdyke Rd, Bloomfield Hills, Tuesday 11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10:30 am. Genevieve Mikula Bessette, age 90, died peacefully, surrounded by family on Tuesday, March 27th, 2018. Genevieve was born in Toronto, Canada to Polish immigrants, Walter and Victoria Mikula. She graduated from Marygrove College with her Bachelor?s Degree, and from the University of Detroit with her Master?s Degree, and was a lifelong educator, retiring as a math improvement specialist for Region 3 in the Detroit Public Schools. She married Marc Conrad Bessette in 1955.
Genevieve had a? very strong Roman Catholic faith. She was particularly proud that St. Andre Bessette?canonized October 17th, 2010 at St. Peter?s Square, Vatican City by Pope Benedict XVI was part of her Bessette side of the family. She loved her family and was a dear mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
She was a lifelong fan of the Detroit Tigers, served on many Catholic charitable organizations, including Sweetest Heart of Mary church in Detroit. She loved traveling to Poland to spend time with family, do charitable work, and to take others there to show them Poland?s beauty. One of Mom?s projects was to organize a special event dinner dance as a fundraiser to buy a new organ for the church her parents attended in a small village in Poland. Later in her life, she also bought new doors for her parents? church in Poland.
She is survived by her children Catherine, Stephen, and Peggy; sons-in-law Mark Hafeli and James Knight; grandchildren Mark, Anne, Elizabeth, Michael, Stuart, and Graham; and great grandchildren Aden, Madeline, Selah, Sophia, Jacqueline, Quinn, and Benjamin. She is also survived by her younger brother, Dr. Edward Mikula. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Marc C. Bessette.
Visitation will be held at Lynch & Sons Funeral Home 1368 N. Crooks Road, Clawson, (between 14 & 15 Mile Roads) on Monday, April 2, 2018, 3-7pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Hugo of the Hills Stone Chapel, 2215 Opdyke Road, Bloomfield Hills on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at 11am. Friends may visit at church beginning at 10:30 am.
