Niantic - John E. Bassett Jr., 77, retired electrical engineer, of Niantic,
died Sunday evening at L & M Hospital.
Born on Jan. 6, 1928, in Pawtucket, R.I., he was the son of John E. and Ruth
(Hall) Bassett.
On Nov. 18, 1950, he married Barbara Feather who died on March 17, 199
He is survived by Rachel Ayer, his companion of more than 10 years.
Mr. Bassett attended Central Falls High School, and graduated from the
University of Rhode Island in 1952 with a degree in electrical engineering.
He was a member of the U.S. Army and served in Italy as an MP from 1946-1948.
Mr. Bassett was an engineering consultant for his company JB Controls since
1984. Prior to this he formed his own company, Bassett Electric, from 1969 to
1984. During this time he designed and manufactured control and instrumentation
systems. This business was sold to PDN in Plainville, where he continued to work
as an engineer and president. He also worked at Westinghouse as the site
manager at the Con-Edison Nuclear Plant in Buchanan, N.Y. He designed electrical
systems for Perkin Elmer. He worked for AMF as a control and instrumentation
engineer and manager. While at AMF, Mr. Bassett was responsible for field plant
start-ups, construction and testing of nuclear reactors in locations worldwide.
During his earlier career, he worked at Electric Boat, as an engineer during the
construction of the Nautilus. He instructed radiation monitoring to the Navy at this time.
He also enjoyed teaching courses part time in electrical theory and cod
instrumentation and controls.
He was a member of the Mystic 50 Plus Singles Club, Shoreline 50 Plus, and
Norwich 50 Plus, where he enjoyed telling jokes, serving as their master of
ceremonies and writing the Shoreline's newsletter. He enjoyed dancing,
whistling, music, logic puzzles, baking, woodworking and his yo-yo'
He is survived by two sons and two daughters, John K. Bassett, of Stratford,
Donna Bassett-Edwards, of New Milford, Sharon Bassett, of Bethel, and Robert
Bassett, of Warwick, R.I. He also is survived by two sisters, Ruth Carr, of
San Diego, Calif., and Dorothy Bently, of Cumberland, R.I.; fourteen
grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral service will be held on Thursday, Jan. 13, 2005, at 2 o'clock at
the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons East Lyme Funeral Home, 48 Grand Street, Niantic.
Interment will be private. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 1 o'clock
until the time of the service.

He is survived by Rachel Ayer, his companion of more than 10 years.
