Forrest E. Bassett
Forrest E. Bassett, age 95, passed away on January 26 at his home in South Yarmouth. He leaves his beloved wife Gail; his step-children and step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Forrest was predeceased by his brothers Philip and David and by his first wife, Joyce Tyndall.
A native Cape Codder and the oldest of the three sons of Emily and Earle F. Bassett, he attended Harwich schools. Upon graduation from high school, Forrest studied and certified in aviation mechanics.
He worked as a mechanic at Central Cape Dodge in Hyannis for 42 years. Many customers insisted that Forrest was the only mechanic they wanted to service their vehicle.
Forrest was a skilled craftsman and as a member of the Cape Cod Woodworkers Club he constructed Toys for Tots for several years. A radio control aircraft enthusiast, Forrest was a member of The Discover Flying RC Club and flew his model planes at the flying field in Marstons Mills.
Wherever there was a frozen lake within driving distance, wintertime found Forrest sailing ice boats, which he built, as a member of the Ice Boating Club. In warmer weather he enjoyed time on the water in several of the boats he owned over the years ? both on the Cape and in Florida, where he spent time in his winter homes.
