W.D. Bassett Dies of Motor Injuries
Military Services Tomorrow for Cape Cod Man
Brewster, Oct. 14 - Military funeral services, with every American
Legion post on Cape Cod represented, will be held here at the Unitarian Church
Tuesday at 2 P.M. for Winthrop D. Bassett, 37, former Harwich Legion po
commander, who died at the Cape Cod Hospital yesterday from injuries received
in an automobile crash. The burial service will be in Brewster cemeter
Bassett, the father of six children, was critically injured in a head-
on collision between the car in which he was riding and one driven by John
Hamilton of New York, the night of Oct. 5 at Orleans. Hamilton, an Orleans
summer resident, was arrested after the accident and charged with drunk
driving and driving to endanger. Further charges may be brought against the
New York man, police said tonight.
A native of Brewster, Bassett was with the A.E.F. for over a year and
after the world war, in which he was gassed and wounded, returned to the Cape,
later becoming assistant postmaster at Harwichport. He was commander of the
Harwich American Legion post in 1932.
Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Dorothy Bassett, six children, his
father, Miller Bassett of Brewster, four sisters and three brothers.
