      Former Times Publisher Elden V. Bass, 90, Dies

      Former Sherman County Times Publisher Elden V. bass, 90, of Loup City died Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at Rose Lane Nursing Home in Loup City.
      Services were at 2 p.m. Monday at Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City, Rev. Frank Schneider officiating. Miliary honors were provided by the Loup City American Legion Post No. 48.
      Visitations were from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
      Cremation was after the service. Burial will be at the Evergreen Cemetery in Loup City at a later date.
      Survivors of his immediate family include his wife, Evelyn of Loup City; twin daughters, Susan J. Trompke of Loup City and Diana Keith of Kearny; son, David bass of Omaha and a sister, Marguerite Richardson of Kearny.
      Also surviving are three grandchildren, Melissa McVittie, Dale Trompke and Victoria Long and three great-grandchildren, KJ Long, Samantha Long and Jacob Long.
      Mr. Bass was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Smith and a brother, Dorman Bass.
      In lieu of flowers, memorial are suggested to Grace Bible Church in Loup City or the Loup City EMTs.
      Higgins Funeral Home of Loup City was in charge of arrangements.
      Elden V. Bass was born Aug. 13, 1913, at Lancaster, Wis, to Vernon and Clara (Nye) Bass.
      Mr. bass moved to Kearney as a young child and attended school there. he graduated from high school in 1932. He graduated from Kearney State Teachers College in may 1940 with a bachelor of science in biology. While in college, he was a member of the Phi Tau Gamma Fraternity and was also the business manager of the university?s yearbook.
      He married Evelyn M. Bussell at Phillipsburg, Kansas on Oct. 24, 1940.
      On Dec, 23, 1940 he joined the Nebraska National Guard Company D in Kearny and spent on year at Camp Robinson near Little Rock, Ark. When World War II was declared he was sent to Fort Ord, Calif. Soon after, he spent 28 months in the Pacific Theatre of Operations. After almost five years ni the Army, he was discharged as a master sergeant.
      In 1942, Mr. bass and his wife moved to Loup City, where they owned and operated a small café for two year. They later bought the Sherman County Times. They won many state and national awards for excellence, service to agriculture and community service during their ownership of the paper.
      He was also a county judge and an associate county judge for over 10 years.
      Mr. Bass and his wife traveled extensively and visited 46 states, including Hawaii six times. They also visited Canada and Mexico.
      He was a member and secretary of the Loup City Volunteer Fire Department, School District No. 1 school board, Oriental Chapter and the Eastern Star. he was a member of and president of the Loup City Chamber of Commerce, Loup City Council, Kearny Elks Lodge, Loup City American Legion and the VFW.
      He was the official weather observer for Sherman County for over 30 years. he was also instrumental in getting Westside park and its 40 apartments in Loup City.
