      Death

BASSETT ? On Sept. 4, Harrott, the beloved wife of Samuel Bassett, who was drowned in the Wairau River, leaving three children to lament her loss.

West Coast Times, New Zealand, Thursday, September 21, 1877

A fatal accident occurred near Blenheim a few days ago. It appears that as a boy was crossing a ford in the Wairui River, he saw a horse and trap on the bank of the river, and a bundle lying near it. The vehicle was recognised as that belonging to Mr Furby, of Tua Marina, and inquiry proved that Mr and Mrs Furby, with a Mrs Bassett, had left Blenheim in it about mid-day, and no doubt remained that the three were drowned. The bodies of the two first-named were discovered the following morning, and the police went out in search of the remaining body, but after continuing all day their efforts proved fruitless. The Furbys have left no children, but Mrs Bassett leaves a husband and three children to lament her loss.
