- SERVICES TO BE FOR A.B. OLIVER
Funeral services will be held this Friday, Dec. 2 at 2 p.m. at the
Community Church, Walker, for A.B. Oliver, 74, retired Cass County Judge of
Probate. Rev. H.A. Mercier will officiate. Interment will be in the Walker
cemetery. Mr. Oliver died Sunday about 5:30 p.m. at the IOOF Hall at
Northfield where he had been residing. A.B. "Ben" Oliver, was born June 23,
1893 at Esterdy, Minn. He retired Jan. 6, 1963, after serving about 32 years
as Cass County's Judge of Probate and Juvenile Judge. A complete obituary will
be given next week.
JUDGE OLIVER FUNERAL RITES HELD DEC. 2
Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 2 at 2 p.m. at the Community
church in Walker for A.B. Oliver, 74, retired Cass County Judge of Probate who
died Nov. 27 in Northfield. Rev. H.A. Mercier officiated, assisted by Rev.
O.R. Swenson. Mrs. Beulah Hendricks was soloist and sang two numbers,
accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Arville Luehr. The honors of the Odd Fellows
ritual were given at the close of the service. Pallbearers were Leonard
Peterson, Gerald Eveland, Gil Sabin, William Merrill, Henry Hagen and Edward
Dorsey. Honorary bearers were Judge Arthur Daniels, Clifford Swenson, B
Greenside, Bill Brownley, Car Steadland, and Faye Harrington. Interment was in
the Walker Cemetery.
A.B. Oliver was born June 23, 1892 at Esterdy, Minnesota, to Mr. and
Mrs. A.A. Oliver. In his early childhood he came with his parents to the
Walker area and lived in Cass County ever since. Ben graduated from the Walker
High School in 1913. On August 23, 1914, he married Hazel Southwick at Call
Lake. Ten children were born to this union. Two of these children preceded
Judge Oliver in death: Capt. Earl F. Oliver was killed in a plane crash Sept.
9, 1958, and Evelyn Oliver Olson passed away Jan. 12, 1964. Ben owned a
edited the Remer Record from 1917 to 1923 when with his family he moved back
to Walker and was partner in the Cass County Pioneer until 1941. In December
of that year he was appointed Judge of Probate for Cass County. He retired as
Judge of Probate and Juvenile Judge in January 1963 after some 31 years of
service. Shortly afterwards his health began to fail and in August of 1964 he
entered the IOOF Home at Northfield. The members left to mourn are his wife
Hazel and eight children: Malcolm Oliver, his wife and family of Brown City,
Mich., Raymond Oliver, wife and family of Nashua, Montana, Roland Oliver, wife
and family of Columbia Heights, Dean Oliver, wife and family of Circle Pines,
June Gallmeier, husband and family of Lexington, Minn., Claramae Humphrey,
husband and family of Carnation, WWash., Catherine Gill, husband and family of
Seattle, Wash., Patricia Oliver of Minneapolis; sisters, Mrs. Luthera Bowman
of Cohasette, Mrs. Emma Bowman of Bend, Oregon, and Mrs. Ann Bloomquist of
Spokane, Wash., brother E.L. Oliver of Washington, D.C. and a host of friends
and other relatives. Those who knew him in his long years of service to the
county and community will remember him as a kindly man, always considerate of
people. He was an outdoorsman and sportsman all his life. He played baseball
many years and supported baseball interests always, loved to fish, and was an
ardent duck and deer hunter. The Thomas Funeral Home was in charge of
arrangements.
