BOB OLIVER, LONGTIME WALKER RESIDENT DIES
Funeral services were held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Calvary Free
Church, Walker, for Robert A. "Bob" Oliver, 72, resident of Walker since 1896,
and an editor and publisher of the recently suspended Cass County Pioneer. He
died at 4:30 p.m. Friday in the Brainerd Hospital after an illness which
overtook him a few months ago. Rev. J.C. Hoseth and Rev. B.C. Olson were the
officiants. Interment was in the family lot at the Walker cemeter
Ronnie Newcomb was vocalist and organist was Mrs. J.C Hoseth.
Pallbearers were Ernest Richardson, Sr., Randolph Clark, Harold Bedoe, Helden
Johnson, Caspar Rausch and Harold Hanson.
Robert A. Oliver was born on May 19, 1890 at Corliss, Minn., to Arthur
A. and Elizabeth Oliver. The family moved to Esterdy in southern Cass County
and on Jan. 16, 1894 established the Cass County Pioneer there. The newspaper
was moved to Walker two years later. Bob Oliver was graduated from high school
at Walker High in 1909 in the first senior class of the school. On March 7,
1914, he was married to Flossie I. Southwick in Walker. Except for about four
years when he was employed by the State of Minnesota, Bob has been associated
with The Pioneer since its establishment. In 1936 he became editor and
publisher. When ill health overcame him, he sold the newspaper on July 19th of
this year to the Northern Minnesota Publishing Company.
Among those left to mourn are his wife, Flossie, daughter Mabel, of
Silver Spring, Maryland, sons Kenneth at Monterey Park, California and
Laurence of Walker; sisters, Mrs. Ann Bloomquist of Tacoma, Wash., Mrs. Emma
Bowman of Bend, Oregon, and Mrs. Luthera Bowman of Walker; brothers, E.L. of
Washington, D.C., and A.B. of Walker; three grandchildren, a number of other
relatives and a host of friends.
Thomas Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.
