Jerry Bassett, Longtime WR Postmaster, Civic Leader, Dies
Jerry Bassett, age 88, of Walnut Ridge died Thursday, April 26, 2001, at St.
Bernards in Jonesboro. Bassett, who served as Walnut Ridge postmaster for over
39 years, was also a former county official, instrumental in the industrial
development of Lawrence County and was a significant supporter of the Walnut
Ridge High School athletic program and Boy Scouting, and an active member of
First United Methodist Church.
Born Sept. 27, 1912, in Walnut Ridge, he was the son of the late Dudley
Bassett, a former county judge, circuit clerk and banker, and Laura McClamroch
Bassett. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Bassett.
Survivors include: his wife of 52 years, Tynse; three sons, Dudley Bassett of
Jonesboro, Richard Barry Bassett, Mike Bassett and his wife, Gari Lynn, of
Little Rock; and two grandsons, Tanner Bassett of Fayetteville and Brett
Bassett of Little Rock.
After graduating from Walnut Ridge High School, Jerry attended the University
of Arkansas in Fayetteville, where he became a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.
In his junior year of college, he was stricken with arthritis and spent the
next three years bedfast and battling the illness. He overcame the illness,
and in 1938, he entered and won a seven-candidate race for tax assessor.
