Katherine Bassett Dies at 77 in Hospital
BELCHERTOWN - A prominent clubwoman who operated her antique store first in Westfield, then in Brimfield, and later Belchertown, and had many friends in Western Massachusetts, wrote her obituary a short time before she died Friday. It is as follows.
Miss Katherine E. Bassett, 77, of Main St., died in Western Massachusetts Hospital, Westfield, Friday, after a long illness. She was born in Northampton o May 6, 1886, daughter of Justin H. and Julia (Williams) Bassett. She spent the early part of her life in Northampton, later moving to Westfield where she opened an antique shop, For the past 25 years, she has operated the Lift the Latch Antique Shop in Westfield, Brimfield, and Belchertown. She was a lifelong member of Edwards Congregational Church, Northampton. She was an honorary member of Pioneer Valley Antique Dealers Association, a former member of Westfield Women's Club, and the Fortnightly Club of Westfield. She leaves no near relatives. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at Beers and Story funeral home, Park St., Belchertown, with Rev. Paul V. Varga, pastor of Belchertown Congregational Church officiating. Cremation will follow. Calling hours will be omitted.
