Bassett, 71, of 583 Chicopee St., a retired 30-year machine operator at Sunoco Product Co., died Saturday in Holyoke Hospital. Born in Holyoke, he attended Chicopee schools. An Army veteran of World War II, he fought in the invasion of Normandy and was awarded the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He leaves his wife, the former Clare LaCroix of Chicopee; four sons, Bruce of Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, Dave and Kenneth, both of Holyoke, and Dennis of Chicopee; two daughters, Christine Johnson of Springfield and Darlene Hosier of Holyoke; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be Tuesday morning at James P. Hobert and Sons Funeral Home with burial in St. Rose de Lima Cemetery in Chicopee. Calling hours are Monday afternoon and evening.
