Philip was born April 23, 1921, in PeEll, WA, to Lorenzo Johnson and Mildred Hatch Johnson. He grew up in Minnesota where his father was a Methodist Minister. He graduated from Little Falls High School. Attended Hamline University in St. Paul for three years. He entered the armed forces Oct. 30, 1942, and served with the 1337th Army Air Force Base Unit stationed in India and Burma. He graduated from the University of Idaho in 1949 with a degree in horticulture. Married Maxine Bassett on Dec. 21, 1946, in Boise, Idaho. They spent their first summer together at Spades Mountain fire lookout in Coeur d'Alene National Forest. He has three sons: Treve and wife Joann in Albany, CA, Kurt and wife, Beth in Freeland, WA, Arlen and wife Ann Graham of Austin, TX. He has six grandchildren, Aaron and Amy, Dylan and Hailey, Toland and Merek. He has a foster daughter, Laurie Long in San Rafael. Phil's family also included many international exchange students. Phil enjoyed the out-of-doors hiking and sailing. He was a skilled woodworker building ship models and wood sculptures. He was an avid reader and enjoyed history. Phil was active in Boy Scouts and Faith United Methodist Church. He retired from the Fred C. Gloeckner Company of NY as a salesman and horticultural consultant. A memorial service will be held in the spring of 2017. Donations may be made to Harbor House.
