Walt Bassett, 87, was born in Fern Prairie, near Camas, WA, on June 9, 1929 to Bert and Cloa (Moore) Bassett. He attended Camas High School, where he met his lifetime "Honey", Vera Sage. They were married on May 8th, 1948, and spent nearly 69 happy years together. They had two children, Richard "Dick" and Sharon. Walt worked in the Camas paper mill, before becoming an insurance agent in the early 1960s. But he soon realized that was a mistake, and spent the next 35 years as a Real Estate Broker. He founded Battle Ground Realty, (today known as Coldwell Banker United Brokers) and later WRB Company. He was involved in the development of The Cedars and High Valley, and also built Battle Ground Plaza. He and Dick dabbled in selling used cars, and Walt enjoyed buying and selling his own new cars, mostly Cadillac's. He and Vera were Snow Birds, and enjoyed about 25 winters in the Palm Springs, CA area, before age and infirmity kept them home year-round. He was also an avid Mariners fan. After a long decline, Walt quietly slipped away on Saturday, March 4th.
He is survived by his wife; his children and their spouses: Dick Bassett (Janae Phipps) and Sharon (Terry) Woosley; 3 grandchildren: Stacey Bassett, Holli Woosley Smith and Kyle Woosley; and 2 great-grandchildren: Caroline and Parker Woosley. Services will be Saturday, March 18th, 12:30 p.m., at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
