Deaths
Reverend Benjamin J. Bass
Latta - Reverend Benjamin J. Bass, 75, entered the Church Triumphant on May 16, 2005. Born in Sellers, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Joe Manly Bass and the late Carrie Hayes Bass.
Ben attended Latta High School and Presbyterian Junior College, Maxton, North Carolina. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina, Columbia, and Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, Georgia. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, where he received the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat.
Ordained as a Minister of the Gospel in June 1959, he served the following Presbyterian (USA) churches: Midway (Maxton), North Carolina; Pembroke, North Carolina; Saluda, South Carolina; Indiantown, Williamsburg County, South Carolina; Parkwood, Florence; Sherwood, Fayetteville, North Carolina; Kentyre, Hamer, South Carolina; and McCall, South Carolina. He was honorably retired (H.R.) on December 31, 1988, by New Harmony Presbytery.
Ben was predeceased by Henry Bass, J.M. Bass, Guy Bass, Ella B. Cox, Carolyn B. Evans, Celia M. Basham, Annie H. Dew, J.L. Dew, Richard Dew, Walter (Pete) Dew, Jennings Dew, Mildred D. Goodyear, Edith D. Martin and Lou D. Ranson.
He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Long Bass; daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Don Quinney of North Charleston; foster son, James David Watson (Latta); sister, Grace D. (Buddy) Nichols, Charlotte, North Carolina; step-grandchildren, Lisa (Jim) Hart, Trenton (Nancy) Quinney and Philip Quinney, step-great-granddaughter, Emliy Quinney, many nieces and nephews, numerous cousins, and a multitude of friends.
Services will be held on May 19, 2005, at 3 p.m. at Latta Presbyterian Church with interment following in Magnolia Cemetery, directed by Kannaday’s Funeral Home of Latta. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 18, 2005, at Latta Presbyterian Church and other times at the home at 107 North Mauldin Street, Latta, South Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Latta Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 5, Latta, South Carolina; Thornwell Home for Children, Clinton, South Carolina, or any of the Presbyterian Homes in South Carolina.
