Leonard E. Bassett

Leonard E. Bassett died Friday, December 12, 2014 at St Joseph Mercy Hospital. He was 75. He was born December 7, 1939 in his family home in Roseville, Michigan to Harold and Julie (DeClerq) Bassett. He graduated from Fraser High School in 1958 and served in the navy from 1958-1962, stationed mainly in Japan. On June 9, 1963 he married Judith Weber at St John Lutheran Church in Fraser. They were blessed with four children. Leonard worked for J L Hudson?s for many years, beginning as a clerk in the bakery downtown, eventually moving into a management position for the corporation. In 1984, he and Judy relocated to Seward, Nebraska where they both earned teaching degrees from Concordia College (now Concordia University). Since graduation in 1986, Len and Judy served as teachers at a number of Lutheran schools in Utah, Michigan, and Missouri. Len continued his education and earned both a Masters Degree and a PhD in Education Administration and served as principal in several Lutheran schools. After Judy?s untimely death in 1997, Len became the Dean of Graduate Studies at Concordia University, Nebraska where he taught and served until his retirement in 2001. Since retirement, he split his time between Oscoda, Michigan and Sebring, Florida.
Len loved to hunt, fish and play euchre, and was known for his sense of humor and love of practical jokes. He had an abiding interest in learning, particularly American history. He was active in every church of which he was a member, serving in a variety of capacities. He served as Councilman for the City of Fraser, and on the planning and development committee for the library. Len believed in civic involvement and maintained a keen interest in politics, remaining active in the Republican Party until his death.
Len is survived by his children Matt (Dawn) Bassett, Gretchen (Philip) Penhallegon, Nathan (Molly) Bassett, Jeremy (Julie) Bassett; nine grandchildren Zachary (Heather), Benjamin, Hannah, Micah, Hope, Gabriel, Jesse, Abigail, and Leah; one great-grandson Theodore; brothers Edward (Francis) Bassett and James Bassett. He was preceded in death by his wife Judith, his parents, and sister-in-law Mary Bassett.
Visitation will be Sunday, December 21st at St Paul Lutheran Church, 106 Dexter St, Milan, MI from 1-3pm. Funeral service will be held Sunday, December 21st at 3pm at the church.
Memorial contributions in Len?s name may be made to the Judith Bassett Scholarship Fund at Concordia University, Seward, Nebraska or to the Lutheran Schools Tuition Assistance Fund at St Paul Lutheran Church, Milan, Michigan. www.ochalekstark.com
