      GOFFSTOWN - Albert H. "Bert" Leonard, of Goffstown and formerly of Lebanon, passed away peacefully on Dec. 11, 2015, at the Community Hospice House, Merrimack, after a courageous battle with lymphoma, with his family by his side, at the age of 72.

      Born on June 1, 1943, Bert was the oldest son of the late Lawrence and Blanche (Bassett) Leonard. He lived much of his childhood with his late aunt and uncle, Helen and Bob Agan, in White River Junction, Vt.

      He was the loving husband of Mary P. Leonard and the late Sandra Geratowski; devoted father of Pamela J. Leonard of Lebanon, and dedicated stepfather of Leah (Jason) Meehan of South Boston and Renee (Jason) Marshall of Beverly, Mass, grandsons Kevin and Brian. Bert is also survived by his brothers and sisters: Lawrence (Linda) Leonard Jr. of Lebanon; Patricia (George) Blanchard of Lebanon; Stanley (Linda) Leonard of Kings Chapel, N.C.; Delina Nichols of Canaan; and John (Donna) Leonard of Lebanon; his great-aunt, Mary Johnson, of White River Junction, Vt. He was predeceased by his sister, Ann Tolbert. He leaves behind cousins, nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews.

      At the age of 17 he joined the United States Air Force. Following his discharge, he began employment with the Lebanon Fire Department, where he worked as a full-time firefighter from 1967 until retiring in 1988 with the rank of captain. He then became a member of the call department from 1988 until 2010, when he became a lifetime member of the Lebanon Fire Department. Bert worked as a special police officer in Lebanon for eight years and in Hanover for 23 years. For the last five years, he worked for Merchant's Auto in Hooksett.

      He served as the Grafton County representative on the executive board of the New Hampshire State Firemen's Association from 1967 until 2013. During his last two years, he served as sergeant at arms. On Nov. 14, 2015, he was elected NHSFA vice-president emeritus. Bert was also on the Lebanon City Council for eight years, and from March 2000-2001, he served as assistant mayor.

      SERVICES: Family and friends are invited to calling hours at the Ricker Funeral Home on School Street in Lebanon on Wednesday, Dec. 16, from 1 to 3 and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Church in Lebanon on Thursday, Dec. 17, at 10 a.m. Please join us for a luncheon at the Fireside Inn, West Lebanon, following the Mass.

      In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Upper Valley Humane Society in Enfield or the Community Hospice House in Merrimack.
