Bassett Jr., 43, a native of San Diegan and World War II hero who made his home in this area all his life, died Tuesday in a hospital. Bassett, a project scheduler at Rohr Corp., was wounded while serving in the Navy at the Battle of Midway in World War II. He was aboard the aircraft carrier Yorktown when it was sunk. Bassett was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Purple Heart. He retired in 1958 as a chief photographer?s mate after 20 years of service. He was a member of Naval Masonic Lodge in Warrington, Fla.
