Bassett, 75, of Rte. #443 died suddenly Tuesday, October 15th at the Cobleskill Regional Hospital after being stricken suddenly at home. Peter was born October 13, 1938 in Gloversville, a son of Merwyn Francis and Edyth Lane (Williams) Bassett. He graduated from Gloversville High School, received a bachelor's degree from Boston University under the ROTC program, and PH.D. and master's from Albany State. He served out his enlistment as a company commander training Military Police at Ft. Gordon, GA. Peter taught American History at Gloversville Estee Middle School, served as Assistant Superintendent at the former Richmondville School District, Superintendent at St. Regis Falls, Fort Ann, and finally Schoharie School District, retiring in 1993. Following his retirement, Dr. Bassett served as interim Superintendent at St. Johnsville, Gloversville and Piseco. He was an active member in the Schoharie Kiwanis Club, the Old Stone Fort Museum, Schoharie County Historical Society, the former American Legion Post #1261 and the Timothy Murphy American Legion Post #248 in Middleburgh and the Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity and a former member of Schoharie Rotary. Survivors include his wife, Janis Alida (Wells) Bassett, whom he married on June 29, 1963 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Gloversville; three daughters, Cheryl (Mark Lapointe) Goodman of Hampton, NY, Lisa (Jon) Derochie of Schoharie, and Wendy (Robert II) Lunt of New Paltz; seven grandchildren, Breanna Blanchard, Jared and Emily Rose Goodman, Elizabeth Minersagen, Brian Derochie, Garrett and Taylor Lunt, along with a great-granddaughter Maci Mae Lunt. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 17th at the Langan Funeral Home, 327 Main St., Schoharie where a funeral service will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in the Old Stone Fort Cemetery with military honors.
