Merwyn received a bachelor's degree in business administration from
Boston University in 1930 and later attended Ohio State University to study
accounting. In 1935 he married his wife Edyth William who died in March of
1986, and began working as a certified public accountant for the Ernest L.
Luft Co. in Gloversville, NY which later became Cash and Bassett in 196
After retiring in 1971 he was an accountant for various school districts for
five years with Cash and Bassett. Mr. Bassett was a member of the Association
of Certified Public Accountants and a charter member and past president of the
Gloversville Rotary Club, where he was named a Paul Harris Fellow in 1989.
He was a third degree Mason with Johnstown Lodge 3 and a member of the
Eagles Aerie, the Foresters and the Eccentric Club, all in Gloversville and
the Elks and Moose lodges in Englewood, FL.
Mr. Bassett served on the board of directors of the former
Gloversville Glovers minor league baseball team.
During WWII he served with the N.Y. State Guard.
