Dorothy Myhre
Dorothy Hughes Myhre, who was loved greatly and will be missed dearly by her immediate and large extended family, died on December 10, 2013 in Bellingham, WA. She entered eternal life with Jesus Christ four days before her 96th birthday. Dorothy was born on December 14, 1917 in Ferndale, WA the oldest child and only daughter of Horace L. "Bud" Hughes and Doy (Slater) Hughes. She graduated from Ferndale High School in 1935 and attended the University of Washington, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. After living in Seattle, WA during World War II, Dorothy met and later married Richard J. Myhre. They were married on May 28, 1949, and later moved to Edmonds, WA where they lived for almost 40 years while raising four children. She participated in PTA during her children's school years and led a Campfire group when her daughter Doy was a member. With Dick, she was a ski school chaperone for several years. Dorothy and Dick were active in the Edmonds United Methodist Church. They loved square dancing and playing bridge with a special group of Edmonds friends. In 1964 Dorothy became the first paid Director of Volunteers at what was then called Stevens Memorial Hospital in Edmonds, and she remained in that position until her retirement in 1984. After that Dorothy and Dick divided their time between residences at Birch Bay, WA and in Mesa, Ariz., though in recent years they lived year-round at Birch Bay. Along with square dancing and bridge, Dorothy had many hobbies over the years, including golf, skiing, clogging, reading, genealogy, cross-stitching, hardanger embroidery, antiques, bird watching, agate hunting on the beach at Birch Bay, and following the University of Washington football team, her beloved Huskies. She was a member of PEO chapters in Ferndale, Edmonds and Blaine, WA and was honored in 2013 for 75 years of membership. She also belonged to the Whatcom Chapter of the Daughters of Pioneers. But of all her many interests, her foremost love was her family. Holidays and birthdays were special events and she treasured those get-togethers throughout her life, and particularly in her later years when she enjoyed nothing more than doting on her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was the person most responsible for continuing the tradition of a Fourth of July celebration for extended family at Birch Bay, an annual gathering that brings together several generations of descendants of John and Inda Slater of Ferndale, Dorothy's maternal grandparents. Dorothy is survived by Richard, her husband of more than 64 years; and by son, Craig Knowlton (Sheryl) of Edgewood, son, Keith Knowlton (Julie) of Kirkland, daughter, Doy Groenenberg (Calvin) of Yakima, and son Richard Myhre Jr. (Joyce) of Edmonds. In addition, she is survived by 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. A private internment service will be held for immediate family at Woodlawn Cemetery in Ferndale. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Garden Street United Methodist Church in Bellingham. Memorials may be made in Dorothy's name to the Whatcom Hospice Foundation, 2901 Squalicum Parkway, Bellingham 98225-1851.
