Boonville man drowns in creek

BOONVILLE ? A Boonville man fishing with a friend in a Spencer County creek drowned last night when he jumped into the creek as water started to fill the boat.
Dead is Charles Bass Sr., 32, a father of five children. The drowning occurred in Little Pigeon Creek near Bullocktown located several miles southeast of Boonville on the Spencer-Warrick county line.
Police said Bass stood up in the boat, causing the boat to start rolling. When water started filling up the boat, Bass jumped into the water.
Police said Bass, a construction company employe, was fishing with a friend, Richard Murray, 27, also of Boonville. Bass jumped into about six feet of water at about 10:15 p.m. and his body was recovered two hours later by Boonville firemen and policemen.
Bass is survived by his wife, Wanda; three daughters, Barbara, Tammy and LaDonna, all at home; two sons, Charles Jr., and Ronald, both at home; his parents. Mr. and Mrs. John Bass of DeGonia Springs; brother John, Chester and Kenneth, all of Boonville, and Ralph and Paul, both of DeGonia Springs; and a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Newton of DeGonia Springs.
