      Mabel H. Toms
      Mabel "May" Hooker Toms, 75, of 1100 Sam Lions Trail, Martinsville, died Wednesday, May 23, 2001, at her home following a lengthy illness. She was born November 29, 1925, in Martinsville, daughter of the late J. Clyde Hooker Sr. and the late Mabel Bassett Hooker. Her husband, Dr. Paul Bernhardt Toms died Jan. 31, 1982.
      She graduated from Martinsville High School in 1943 and received a bachelor of arts degree from Randolph Macon Women's College in Lynchburg in 1947. She served on the board of directors of Hooker Furniture Corp. from 1977 to 1999. At Christ Epsicopal Church, where she was a member, she was the first female Senior Warden and served as a Lay Reader and Chalice Bearer. She also was a member of the Wednesday Book and Martinsville Garden clubs and a sustaining member of the Charity League.
      Surviving are five children, Jane Toms Thomasson of Martinsville, May Hooker Toms of Greensboro, North Carolina, Nancy Toms Rizor of Atlanta, Georgia, Paul B. Toms Jr. of Martinsville, and Clyde Hooker Toms of Richmond; one brother, J. Clyde Hooker Jr. of Martinsville; and 13 grandchildren.
      The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. today at the home, 1100 Sam Lions Trail.
      The funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Christ Episcopal Church with the Reverends Russell Burchard and Lynwood Wells and the Right Reverend A Heath Light, retired, officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
