Tom Charles Married.
Bula Ward and Tom Charles Married at Alamorgoro, New Mexico Last Week.
The news of the marriage of Mr. Tom Charles, formerly editor of the
Freeman, and Miss Bula Ward of this city at Alamogordo, New Mexico, will come
as a pleasant surprise to their many friends in this county.
They were married last week in New Mexico and the news reached here
Tuesday.
A year ago Mr. Charles took his family to New Mexico, with the view of
improving his wife's health, who later died. He became interested in a
newspaper at that place and remained. Miss Ward was a faithful nurse during
the sickness of Mrs. Charles, who was her aunt. After Mrs. Charles' death Miss
Ward returned to Belleville and resumed her work as reporter for the Freeman.
She is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Perez Smith of Republic. While in Belleville
she made many friends who will wish her joy and prosperity in her far away New
Mexico home.
Mr. Charles was born in Republic county and for several years
published the Republic City News and Belleville Freeman. He is a man of
integrity, moral courage and many fine personal qualities. The Telescope
extends congratulations and good wishes.

Funeral Rites for Pioneer Recently Held
Funeral services were held recently for Mrs. Bula L. Charles, 86, of
Alamogordo, Tularosa Basin pioneer and former correspondent for The El Paso
Times who died May 10 in Alamogordo.
The Rev. Don L. Forsman officiated at service in Grace United
Methodist Church of Alamogordo. Burial was in Monte Vista Cemeter
A native of Warwick, Kansas, Mrs. Charles was known as the "First Lady"
of Alamogordo. She arrived at the Tularosa Basin in 1908, and became known as
the unofficial historian of the region. She published volumes of material on
the Basin, and was recognized as an authority on the writer, Eugene Manlive
Rhodes.
Upon the death of her husband, Mr. Tom Charles, she managed the
insurance firm he established in 1917. She was the first woman ever to serve
on the Alamogordo Chamber of Commerce board of directors and for many years
was chairman of the Chamber's annual tours to points of historical interest.
For many years she was Alamogordo correspondent for The Time
In recent years she helped form the Alamogordo Senior Retired
Citizens.
Survivors are four sons, Perl Charles of Vernon, Arizona; Ralph
Charles of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Ray Charles of Seattle, Washington; and
Ward Charles of Alamogordo; two daughters, Mrs. Kenneth McClernon of Fordland,
Missouri, and Mrs. Ben Rutz of Albuquerque; three sisters, Mrs. Grace Willis
of Alamogordo, Mrs. Bertha Van Nortwick of Camarillo, California, and Mrs.
Ashley Russell of Superior, Nebraska; a brother, Leonard Smith of Corvallis,
Oregon; 12 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and four great-great-
grandchildren.
