Clyde Bass
Clyde Bass enlisted in the U.S. Navy (S/N 4114708) on 27 January 1942. He was received on board the destroyer USS Gwin (DD-433 on 27 February 1943.
Chief Specialist (A) Clyde Bass, U.S. Navy was serving aboard the destroyer *U.S.S. Gwin (DD-433) when she was hit by a Japanese torpedo in the early morning hours of 13 July 1943 amidships in her engine room and exploded in the Battle of Kolombangara (in Kula Gulf off the northeastern coast of Kolombangara in the Solomon Islands). Two officers and 59 men were killed or missing. Clyde was one of the men killed. He was buried at sea at 10.50S-160.28E.
*The ship was so badly damaged that she had to be scuttled.

Naval Casualty in Pacific
Clyde Bass, Former Kirsville College Student, Killed in Action
Relatives here have received word of the death, July 13, through the sinking of a naval vessel in action in the Southwest Pacific, of Clyde Bass, 24 years old, chief specialist, naval reserve.
His mother, Mrs. C.M. Bass, lived at Ulman, Mo. Bass was graduated from Kirksville college in 1941 and enlisted in the navy as an athletic instructor. Later he was assigned to sea duty.
Besides his mother he leaves three brothers, Henry C. Crisp, 2941 Forest avenue; Basil Crisp, California, Mo., and Pvt. Perry Crisp, and two sisters, Mrs. John O. Alexander, 634 North Thirty-first street, Kansas City, Kansas, and Mrs. Fred Jarrett, Atwood, Colo.
