A memorial mass for Ryan Bassett, age 19, who died unexpectantly at Arnold Palmer Children?s Hospital in Orlando, FL on Monday, Jan. 26, 2009 will be held Saturday, January 31 at 1:00 p.m. at Our Lady of Hope Catholic Church in Port Orange, FL. Born in Daytona Beach on October 20, 1989 to Michael and Leslie Bassett, Ryan was a senior at Spruce Creek High School and was to graduate in May, 2009. He accomplished the rank of Eagle Scout with Troop 456 in Port Orange, with whom he had many friends. As his Eagle project, he organized the painting of murals at the Port Orange YMCA Children?s Center. He was an avid reader, especially biographies of our U.S. Presidents and was thrilled to vote in his first presidential election this past November. An animal lover at heart, Ryan loved dogs, turtles and manatees. He cared for his dog, Maggie and two turtles, Donald and Douglas and loved them dearly. Ryan lived a courageous life that included multiple heart and back surgeries as well as other surgeries under the skill, direction and friendship of many doctors. His family will be forever grateful to Dr. Thomas Carson, Dr. Floyd Livingston, and Dr. Mary Farrell of Arnold Palmer Hospital in Orlando, Dr. Evan Zahn at the Miami Children?s Hospital, and the late Dr. Gary Haas at St. Joseph?s Hospital in Tampa. Ryan?s family also wants to thank the Elementary School, Spruce Creek High School. Ryan was loved by every person who met him and he should be an inspiration to all of us. He endured so much through his short life without a complaint. Ryan loved camping at Camp LaNoChe in Paisley, Florida with his Boy Scout Troop 456. The family would like to acknowledge the staff and leaders at Camp LaNoChe for allowing him to be as independent as possible but always being right behind him to lend a helping hand. Ryan will be painfully missed by his surviving family, his loving parents, Michael and Leslie Bassett; his adoring brother, Kevin; his great-aunt, Helenita Castro; great-uncles, Harold Meehan, Pedro Marti and Wilfred Meehan; aunt and uncles, Kevin and Jackie Kane, Sharon and Sal Solarusso, Diane and Patrick Carpenter, Patty and Kevin Bickens, Steven and Twila Bassett, Carolyn and Marc Wriolie, John and Kathy Bassett and Gary Bassett; and cousins, Sarah, Michelle and Jennifer Kane, Kane and Dominic Calarusso, Sarah Lagares, Joshua Bickens, Cara Caitlyn, Andrew and Stephen Wriolie, Sean Bassett and Sharon and Bobby Bassett. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Ryan?s memory to Camp Boggy Creek, 30500 Brantley Branch Rd., Eustis, FL 32736, The Central FL Council, Boy Scouts of America, 19151 S.
