Gladys C. Bassett
BASSETT ? Mrs. Gladys Clark Bassett, a former school teacher and church and civic leader in Bassett for more than sixty years, died Monday night at her home at the age of 85. She was born July 9, 1896 in Spring Valley, Virginia, and was the daughter of the late Henry Hills Clark and Mrs. Sarah Cornett Clark. Following graduation from Martha Washington College, she came to Bassett in 1920 to teach at Bassett High School. In 1923, she married William McKinley Bassett who died July 17, 1960. Mrs. Bassett was a founder and active member of the Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church where she served in a number of capacities. She was a charter member and past president of the Bassett Garden Club. Mrs. Bassett had been a member of the Board of Trustees of Oak Hill Academy, a trustee of the Bassett Public Library, a member of The Daughters of the American Revolution and the Unted Daughters of the Confederacy. She also was a member of the Bassett American Legion Auxiliary. Her survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Spencer W. (Mary Elizabeth) Morten, Bassett, Mrs. Robert E. (Kathryn) Leisy, Incline Village, Nev.; seven grandchildren, Robert E. Leisy, Jr, William Davis Leisy, Kathryn Leisy Thompson, Sarah Morten Fisher, William Bassett Morten, Spencer W. Morten, III, and John Gregory Morten; and three great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church with Dr. Earl Calvert and Dr. William Hales officiating. Entombment will be in the Bassett Mausoleum. The body was taken to the home to lie in state until the funeral. The family requests that memorials be made to the Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church. Collins Funeral Home, Bassett, is in charge of the arrangements.
