      Hero Back in Action

A Charlestown Army private, who was struck by a sniper’s bullet while rescuing a wounded buddy in Italy, was among 63 New Englanders listed by the War Department yesterday as wounded in action.
The hero soldier, Pvt. Frederick J. Bassett, 19-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Bassett of 5 Gardner street, Charlestown, was cited for bravery on the field.
During an assault May 31, a buddy of Pvt. Bassett was wounded seriously at a forward reconnaissance point. The Charlestown youth went to his rescue, crawling along the brow of a hill under enemy fire. Before he reached the outpost where the wounded man lay, a sniper got him. But he continued on, though painfully wounded, and reached the side of his buddy. He stayed there with him for the next five hours until darkness, when he carried him back to a field hospital.
Pvt. Bassett and the soldier he carried became patients at the hospital. Now Pvt. Bassett has written his family that he has recovered and rejoined his unit.
