    • Nelson's death certificate says that his parents were both born in Canada. The 1880 census of Buchanan County, Missouri lists his father as being born in Canada.
      Nelson served as an ordinary seaman from 12 Jan 1856 to 7 Oct 1857 in San Francisco, California, discharged from the USS Independence. He served from Dec 1861 to Mar 1862 in Co. F, 1st Michigan Lancers as a private. He served 7 Mar 1865 to 22 Sep 1865 in Co. D, 8 Michigan Cavalry as a private. On his enlistment papers he was listed with blue eyes, black hair, light complexion, 5 foot 3 inches tall. In July and August 1865 he was in confinement awaiting trial. His trial was 28 Aug 1865 and he was court martailed for violating Article 7 (Mutiny), found guilty, imprisoned for 30 days with loss of pay and allowances.
      In about 1877, Nelson worked on the Kansas City Rail Road. About 1880 he broke his ankle while building for Milton Tootle on 4th between Felix and Francis Sts., St. Joseph, Missouri. He lived in Michigan until 1872, in Missouri until 1883, in Kansas until 1888, in Arkansas until 1905, in Tempe, Arizona until moving to California in 1909 and in California until his death in 1916.
