Bassett, Lucy Brown, 95, died Friday, December 14, 2001, at her home in Bassett. She was the daughter of George Akers Brown and Minnie May Matthews of Martinsville, and the widow of John Douglas Bassett who died in 1966. Survivors include three daughters, Minnie B. Lane, Jane B. Spilman, and Lucy B. Andrews; and a son, John D. Bassett, III. Also surviving are fifteen grandchildren and forty great-grandchildren. She graduated from Martinsville High School and Beaver College in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, where she majored in elementary education. Returning to Martinsville, she and a friend, Ray Womak, formed the Blue Bird Kindergarten. Mrs. Bassett was a charter member of the Bassett Garden Club and the Bassett Public Library Association, and served on the Board of Trustees of Averett College in Danville, Virginia. Her consuming interest was the Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church, where she was a devoted member for 60 years. Eleanor Roosevelt's well known dictum, "We should constantly be reminded of what we won in return for what we have," was one to which Lucy Bassett adhered throughout her long life. She was well known for her generosity of spirit and her support and active involvement in numerous charities. Unknown by most are the countless times she opened her heart and purse to people in need. The family will receive friends Saturday, December 15, 2001, from 2 to 5 p.m. at her home, 1416 Oak Level Road in Bassett. Following private interment at Oakwood Cemetery, a memorial service will be held Sunday, December 16, 2001, at 12:45 p.m. at the Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church, P.O. Box 507, Bassett Virginia 24055.
