Levi Bassett
Levi Bassett was the son of Benajor and Caroline (Sanford) Bassett and, after the war, he was for many years a well known business man in Hammondsport ? long engaged in harness and repair business and, at the time of his death a few years ago, and extensive real estate owner here.
Comrade Bassett enlisted at Penn Yan on Dec. 14, 1863, for three years and was mustered into Co. G 14th Regiment, New York Heavy Artillery. Under command of Colonel E.C. Marshall, the regiment served as heavy artillery and as infantry, and remained in the New York Harbor Department of the East before serving as a Provisional Bridge Corp. Later Mr. Bassett served as a private in the Third Brigade, First Division, Ninth Corps.
His battles were Spottsyvlania, May 8-24, 1864; South End, Mary 27-31; Cold Harbor, June 1-12; Petersburg, June 15-19; Mine Explosion, July 30; Weldon Railroad, Aug. 18-21; Poplar Springs Church, Sept. 30; Hatchers Run, Oct 27-28; Fort Steadman, March 28; Fall of Petersburg, April 2. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 15, 1865 at the close of the war.
