Donald J. Bassett, 69
SPENCER - Donald J. Bassett, 69, of 4 Water St., a retired business owner and operator and a longtime musician, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, in Providence Extended Care Center, Worcester, after a brief illness.
He leaves his wife of 49 years, Beverly A. (Fountaine) Bassett; a son, Norman D. Bassett of Spencer; two daughters, Diane I. Baxter of the Jefferson section of Holden and Lynn C. Dalbeck of Princeton; a sister, Claire Lapierre of Hernando, Fla.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. He was born in Spencer, son of Ernest and Irene (Gauthier) Bassett, and wintered in Orange City, Fla. He graduated from David Prouty High School and attended New England Conservatory of Music, Boston. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War.
Mr. Bassett was a licensed electrician and electrical contractor, owning Don Bassett Electrick for 30 years and retiring in 1994. He was also a professional musician, playing drums in area bands here and in Orange City. He taught drums from his home for many years and played drums in the Navy band at Dwight D. Eisenhower's inauguration.
He was a member of American Legion Post 138, Spencer Lions Club, and Our Lady of the Rosary Church. He enjoyed playing horseshoes.
The funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 7, in Our Lady of the Rosary Church, 7 Church St. Burial will be at the family's convenience in Mary, Queen of the Rosary Cemetery. Henri Morin & Son Funeral Home, 23 Maple Terrace, is directing arrangements.
