- George was appointed manager of the railroad department of the H.
Channon Company in Chicago, Illinois. He was educated in the Austin, Illinois
public schools. His first employment was copying waybills in the storehouse of
the Chicago and North Western. On leaving school in 1879 he became office boy
for Crerar Adams Company, advancing to salesman and finally to vice-president
of that company.

Railway Purchases July, 1931
George D. Bassett has been appointed manager of the railroad
department of the H. Chammon Company, Chicago, Ill., succeeding J.L. Taylor,
vice-president assigned to other duties. Mr. Bassett was born in Batavi
Ill., May 17, 1863, and educated in the Austin Public Schools. His first
employment was copying waybills in the storehouse of the Chicago and North
Western. On leaving school in 1879 he became office boy for Crerar Adams and
Co., advancing to salesman and finally vice-president of that company which
position he occupied at the time of his recent change.
Mr. Bassett comes from a line of railroad men. His father was a
storekeeper for the Chicago and North Western Railway a good many years and
his grandfather, George Bassett, was carpenter bridge builder of the old
Galena and Chicago Union Railway and built the old Canal Street Station, the
first railway station in Chicago.

GEORGE BASSETT, AUSTIN PIONEER, TAKEN BY DEATH
George Dow Bassett of Lombard, a pioneer Austin resident, has passed
away at the age of 75 years. Services were on Tuesday, September 13, at the
Oak Park Masonic Temple of Oak Park, with interment at Elmlawn, Elmhurst.
The Bassett homestead was on Lotus near Lake, where the Austin
Y.M.C.A. is now located. Mr. Bassett's father was a partner in the firm of
Rice and Bassett, who were the original contractors of old Town Hall. M
Bassett was a past commander of Siloam Commandery of Oak Park. He was t
husband of the late Nellie Bowen Bassett; father of Mrs. Georgina Barbe
Goodrich W., Mrs. Adah Kelsey, Mrs. Genevieve Mayer and Gerald D. Bassett.
